Dictator of Romania. After working his way through the Romanian Communist Party, he became the leader of Romania in 1967. At first, he briefly liberated the country, with more freedom of press and an official denouncement of the invasion of Czechoslovakia. However, after state visits to North Korea and China, he quickly got rid of these thaws, and started a cult of personality around him. He ran with an iron fist, with kidnappings, executions, and torture of political dissidents. On December 21st, 1989, he was overthrown in a revolution, and on Christmas Day of that year, after a ninety minute show trial, he and his wife were executed; capital punishment in Romania was soon abolished afterwards.
