Born as Milutin Grujic in Lipova, Baranya county (then Austrian empire). His father was priest Prokopije Grujic, and mother Agripina born Kosic. He had older brother Dragutin Grujic, who later became priest in Kacsfalu (Jagodnjak) and protoiereus of Mohacs. After finishing education in his birthplace, Mohacs, Pecs and Sremski Karlovci, Milutin became orthodox monk and got name Nikanor. He had prominent role in proclamation of Serbian Vojvodina in 1848. in Sremski Karlovci. Later he become archimandrite of Kuvezdin monastery in year 1848, and after that archimandrite of Krusedol monastery. His bishop ordination took place in 1861. by patriarch Josif Rajacic. In year 1864. Nikanor became orthodox bishop of Pakrac. As administrator of Serbian patriarchy – metropolitanate (locum tenens patriarch) Nikanor Grujic was appointed by emperor Franz Joseph of Austria in 1872. Same year he became emperor`s privy councilor (Wirklicher Geheimer Rat). In year 1874. Grujic became knight of grand cross (Grosskreuz) of Franz Joseph order, at the same time he ended his administrator duty. Nikanor Grujic was also known as poet, writer, translator and orator. One of his most famous books is epic "Saint Sabbas" (Sveti Sava). He was member of "Serbian Learned Society" (Srpsko uceno drustvo), which later developed in "Serbian academy of sciences and arts". His Excellency bishop Nikanor died at his court in Pakrac and was buried near orthodox church at Gavrinica, Pakrac cemetery.
