Nikolaos Poniropoulos

In memoriam

Greek fighter in 1821 War of Independence and politician. He was a personal friend of Thedoros Kolokotronis and took part in many battles; he was reported to have fought against Dramali at Dervenakia. He was consulted by Kolokotronis before calling the Nation to a Convention in Ermioni and Troizina, where a constitution was passed. He was a senator in the Peloponnesian Senate; later was attorney at the National Assemblies of the Astros and Troizina, and after the liberation he served as Member of Parliament for Kyparissia and as a minister. In 1833 he became the director of the Public Finance Bureau by decision of the Government of Mavrokordatos and the leader of the French party Ioannis Kolettis, who was secretary of the Interior. In 1847, while he was finance minister, he was accused of forgery of protocols with the price of grain, and although he was committed on the basis of a relative provision in the 1844 Constitution, he was not prosecuted.
