Nikos Hanan Stavroulakis was born in England and his father was Petros Stavroulakis (A Greek Orthodox Christian), originally from Chania and [his mother, a Jewish woman] Anna Pinhas. [3] [4] [5]. Niko studied in universities of U.S. of England and Israel specializing in Islamic art . In 1958 he settled in Athens where in the following years he taught in private schools and at the same time worked as a painter and engraver exhibiting his works in galleries and took part in exhibitions in Greece and abroad [6] . TheIn 1965 he officially became a member of the Israeli Community of Athens [3] . In 1969 he moved to Israel where until 1971 he conducted a dig in Jerusalem , while in the years 1972 - 1974 he taught Byzantine art and Byzantine architecture at the University of Tel Aviv [6] . In 1974 Stavroulakis returned to Athens, taught at various educational institutions and was one of the founders of the Jewish Museum of Greece and its director from 1977 to 1993 and then worked for the establishment of the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki . [3] [6] In 1994 he settled in Chania and launched a campaign to restore the historic Etz Hagim Synagogue . His efforts to save and highlight this historic building met with a response and the project was finally completed in 1999 . Nikos Hanan Stavroulakis lived the rest of his life in Chania dealing with the rescue and promotion of Jewish culture and the writing of relevant books until his death on May 19, 2017 .
