FLIGHT SERGEANT AIR BOMBER NORMAN BESWICK 1480976 - 31 (South African Air Force) Squadron - Royal Air Force. Norman was born in Mossley in 1916; he was the son of John and Ann Jane (nee Whalley) Norman became a talented musician at an early age, and received his cap and gown at the age of 14 years. He became well known in local and provincial musical and dramatic circles, and was organist and choirmaster at Abney Congregational Church, Mossley, where he was an active member of the church Amateur Dramatic Society. He was also a member of the Oldham Amateur Dramatic Society, and pianist to a dancing troop at Dukinfield. He enlisted in 1940 and served abroad for 3 years. He completed his training at East London in South Africa. During that time he played with the East London Municipal Orchestra before an audience of 5,000 in an effort for charity. He also played organ and assisted as choirmaster at Trinity Church, East London, in the Republic of South Africa. Norman was airborne on the evening of 22nd August 1944, aboard a Liberator B-24 from Celone to bomb railway yards in Miskolc, Hungary. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter en route and crashed near Eger and Poroszló, Hungary. Three of the crew were killed, including Norman, age 28. Norman is buried in Budapest War Cemetery, Hungary. Norman is commemorated on the St George's Church War Memorial, Mossley.
