Service Number ~ 62440 Unit ~ New Zealand Infantry Private McLennan drowned whilst a prisoner of war, being transported on the S.S. Sebastiano Venier when it was torpedoed off the coast of Greece.. In December 1941 the JASON ,an Italian cargo ship (also known as Sebastiano Venier) sailed from Benghazi with 2000 British and Commonwealth Prisoners of War. They had all been captured in North Africa and were to be transported to Prisoner of War camps in Italy. In the early afternoon of 9 December 1941 the Jason was torpedoed by the submarine H.M.S. Porpoise (commanding officer Lt. Commander E.F. Pizey). The ship did not sinkbut 500 POW's ( 45 of them were New Zealanders ) died as a result of the torpedoing.
