In memoriam

Greek: Παναγής Α. Χαροκόπος [1835-1911] Panagis Charokopos emigrated at a young age to Romania, where he acquired great wealth from the grain trade and the cultivation of large estates which he rented out. In 1899, he settled in Athens. He began to deal with his estates in Thessaly and engage in financial activities. Towards the end of his life, he became involved in politics and was elected a member of parliament with the Liberal Party of Eleftherios Venizelos in 1910. He contributed to the modernization of agriculture in Romania and Greece. He also worked for the development of industry in Greece and actively participated in shaping the country's financial-banking sector in the first decade of the 20th century. He also developed a rich philanthropic activity, benefiting both Greece and Romania. His most important creation was the Harokopio School of Home Economics and Professional Studies in Kallithea, a precursor to today's Harokopio University of Athens, HUA (Greek: Χαροκόπειο Πανεπιστήμιο).
