Panourgias St. Panourgias

1917 – 2008

In memoriam

He fought in WWII as an officer in the Sacred Squadron. He was injured in 1944 during operations on Milos. He reached the rank of brigadier, and he was to be promoted to major general in May 1967, but the Colonels’ coup on 21st April 1967 prevented this. Founder of the "Free Greeks", he was arrested, and placed in complete isolation for 300 days in a prison hotel in Varybobi and displaced for two years in Samothraki, Tsotyli and Thermo, Trichonida. He was promoted to lt. general upon the return to democracy and was elected to parliament at the first free elections, serving in the Karamanlis government as junior transport minister.
