Name Peter Lake Rank Flight Sergeant Death Date 4 Jul 1944 Military Base Brindisi, Italy Service Number 1474551 Unit 148 Squadron Command Mediterranean Ship Halifax II Occupation Nav Casualty Killed in action Burial Place Budapest War Cemetery, Hungary *It Crashed During A Special Operations Supply Drop to Poland. It was seen to be shot down and exploded, 8 bodies were recovered from the aircraft meaning the 'Special Agents' had already been dropped to carry out their mission. The Aircrew had succeeded in their mission but it had cost them their lives. Handley Page Halifax II The Halifax was a four engine long range heavy bomber developed by the Handley Page Aircraft Company. Whilst it was designed and employed as a heavy bomber, the Halifax also saw service role parachuting agents and supplies into occupied Europe, as was the case here. It is thought that Luftwaffe Pilot Hauptmann Leopold Fellerer of StabIII/NJG6 shot the plane down.
