Probus

Roman Emperor. He was born in 232 AD and spent his early career in the army, serving under the Emperor Aurelian during his Eastern campaigns. After the death of the Emperor Tacitus he was named Emperor by his army in the East in opposition to Florianus, who was regarded as ruler in the Western provinces. He was made sole Emperor after Florianus was murdered by his own soldiers in 276 AD. On assuming power he punished the assassins of the earlier Emperor, Aurelian, before travelling west to Rome, defeating the rebellious Goths in Germany on the way. He then captured the Germanic chieftain Semnon and secured the return of Roman prisoners and booty captured in earlier uprisings. He then secured the Rhine frontier by building a series of forts and depots at which he stationed garrisons. He also repelled invaders and built fortresses in the East in the area surrounding Lycia and secured Rome's food supply from Egypt suppressing an uprising and restoring dykes and canals and draining marshes for farming. He survived a number of rebellions led by usurpers from the provincial armies, before finally being killed by his own troops in 282 AD on the orders of the Prefect of the Guard, Carus who succeeded him as Emperor. He was interred under a large burial mound near Sirmium, modern Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, and his name was erased from official inscriptions.
