In memoriam

Qemal Kasaruho, born in Gjirokastër in 1902. Economist, master of several foreign languages, In the 1920s-1940s, he worked as a chief inspector at the customs of Saranda, then general director of Monopolies and Taxes at the Ministry of Finance, during which time he received part in the fight against the Italian-German invaders. After the war, he was not accepted to work as an economist in Tirana, but outside it, in the Rubik mine. On February 19, 1951, an explosion occurred at the Embassy of the former Soviet Union in Tirana, an event known as the "Bomb at the Soviet Embassy". No one was injured in the attack, but the Albanian authorities of that time considered a group of 22 young intellectuals working in Tirana, including 49-year-old Qemal Kasoruho, to be guilty. Despite the lack of any evidence of guilt, he was arrested and sentenced to death. The sentence was executed on the night of February 26-27, 1951 near the village of Mënik, a few kilometers west of Tirana. The bodies were buried in a shallow grave in the field behind. (Kujto.al)
