'They Shall Mount Up With Wings As Eagles'.

Rank: Squadron Leader Service Number: 31469 Service: Royal Air Force 112 Squadron. Awards: Air Force Cross Died: 26 March 1941 Age: 27 years old. Born on the 2nd June 1913, Richard was the son of Courtney Llewelyn Nedwill, and of Ida Constance Nedwill (née Peache), of Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. They had married in 1911. Richard's father was a Doctor. From 1927-1930, Richard was educated at Christ's College before attending Lincoln College for just one year in 1931. He then left to go to England where he joined the Royal Air Force. He was awarded the Air Force cross in 1941. This award was announced in the London Gazette on the 1st April 1941. The citation states: 'This officer has been employed as a flying instructor at No.4 Service Flying Training School for over two years, and is at present in charge of advanced training. He is a most capable pilot and an excellent exponent of the art of front gun attack. By his perseverance and hard work he has produced excellent results. Squadron Leader Nedwill has completed over 1,000 hours instructional flying.' Richard died in a Gladiator accident at Paramythia on 26 March 1941. He had been posted from 112 Squadron (Gladiators) only a few days before on the 22nd March, as Commanding Officer of 211 Squadron, who were operating Blenheims from this forward Greek airfield. At the end of an uneventful afternoon local patrol over Paramythia, his aircraft (a 112 Squadron Gladiator II, N5910) flew into the ground. No explanation was found for the accident. His medals were auctioned by Spinks in 2006. Their estimate was £800-£1,000.
