Royal Australian Artillery VX768 Posting on Death: 2/2nd Field Regiment, he was killed in action in Crete Greece. Description of Vic. Paybook photograph of VX768 Gunner Richard Wilfred Mitchell, 2/2nd Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. Gunner Mitchell, aged 31, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 24 May 1941. He was the son of Edward and Emily Maude Mitchell, and the husband of Marjorie Louisa Mitchell, of Richmond, Vic. He is commemorated on the Athens Memorial Face 10. He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in Richmond Vic, also his name is located at panel 17 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
