Second Lieutenant Rbert Edward Childs, Died of Wounds received in action on the 26th.September 1918, while serving with the 7th.Battalion, The Royal Berkshire Regiment. Robert previously served as Pte. G/47651 in the Royal Fusiliers, serving in the 21st.& 12th.Btns. before being commissioned into The Royal Berkshire Regiment on the 27-3-1917. The 7th.Battalion War Diary entry forthe 25-9-1918 reported: '2/Lt R.E. Childs wounded, 2 OR killed, 12 OR wounded, 3 Mules killed, 2 Horses killed'. Bio added by relative. Robert Edward Childs was the eldest son of Robert Ruston Childs and Mary Jane Childs living in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. He enlisted as a Private in the Public School Corps in May 1915 and was placed in the Fusiliers. He was sent to France in November 1915 and was wounded on the Somme on 16 September 1916, when shot in the head by machine gun fire (apparently saved by his trench helmet). He was sent to the Lady Forester Hospital in Broseley, Salop to recuperate. On recovery, Robert was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Berkshire Regiment and was ultimately sent to Salonika fighting the Bulgarians in the Balkan conflict. Here he was wounded on 25 September 1918 and died of wounds the following day on the 26 September, Aged 27. He was subsequently mentioned in dispatches.
