Son of Robert Eyres and of Ellen Eyres, of Everton, Liverpool. Service Number: 849976 Rank: Gunner Served with: 106th (The Lancashire Hussars) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. The 106th were being evacuated from Nauplia, Greece on the S.S. Slamat, the ship was attacked by German JG-77 aircraft and sank with the loss of 203 crew members and gunners. There were around 508 troops on board the Slamat and many of them were saved by the destroyers HMS Diamond and HMS Wryneck, but both were later also bombed and sunk, resulting in the drowning most of the initial survivors of the Slamat. The total death toll was 975 men (203 from the Slamat crew, 106 from the Wryneck crew, 166 from the Diamond crew and 500 soldiers that were on the Slamat.
