10563 Private R. Mitchell, Royal Scots, 26th October 1918
Private, Royal Scots. Age: Unknown. Private Service Number 10563 Died 20/10/1918 1st Bn. Royal Scots Died of pneumonia. (CWGC) Robert's service number 10568 on the CWGC marker in Livingston Parish Churchyard is wrong and should be 10563. This has been reported to CWGC. I have been unable to prove relationship of Robert and John, possibly cousins. Archie Gilbert. Aug 2019 Robert McNeill Mitchell was born in Mid Calder on 11th December, 1890. His parents were Lancelot Mitchell, a shale miner, and Elizabeth McNeill. They were married in Lanark on 22nd October, 1879. Robert was the younger brother of John Mitchell, who is buried in Livingstone Village Churchyard. Robert Mitchell enlisted in the 1st Battalion Royal Scots as a Private, service number 10563, in December 1909. The battalion moved to Salonica in December 1915. Robert Mitchell died of pneumonia at a Casualty Clearing Station in Salonica on 20th October, 1918.
