Author. She gained fame as a prolific Romanian author who was mostly known for her crime novels. She was called "Agatha Christie of Romania," but she also wrote historical fiction. Her best known novels are those featuring Melania Lupu, an elderly woman who's more than meets the eye. and Minerva Tutovan, a retired math teacher with a great talent for disguises. During her lifetime, she wrote over 35 books, her novels being greatly appreciated for their unexpected plot twists and humorous situations. Born the daughter of a wealthy lawyer, she began attending the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest, yet was expelled in 1953 for political reasons as she was anti-communist. She was required to do factory work for years before returning to college. She did return after a marriage and divorce, graduating in 1967. In 1969, she wrote a script for a television show, which was one of five scripts, and published her first novel. She did remarry to an actor. She died from lung disease.
