Poet, translator, historian, and politician. He was the first president of the Bosnian Parliament. Writing under the pseudonym Mirza Safvet, he was a figure of modern Bosnian and Bosniak literature and the initiator of the Bosniak national revival at the beginning of the 20th century. He was the founder of many newspapers, magazines, and national societies. In 1900, he published "A Short Guide to the Past of Bosnia from 1463 to 1850," which was the standard for studying the history of Bosniaks until the appearance of Muhamed Hadžijahić's "Genesis of the National Question of Bosnian Muslims." In 1894, he responded to the invitation to participate in the laying of the foundation stone of Starčević's home. His collection of Islamic manuscripts and old books, now owned by the Bratislava University Library, is part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme.

On the headpiece there is an epitaph in a poem in Turkish on one side, and an inscription in prose, also in Turkish, on the other.
