Salih Muvekkit-Hadžihuseinović (1825 – March 12, 1888) Bosniak Historian, Librarian, Poet, and Calligrapher Salih Muvekkit-Hadžihuseinović, often known as Salih Sidki Muvekkit Hadžihuseinović, was a prominent Bosniak historian, librarian, and scholar of the 19th century. Born in 1825, he is best remembered for his pioneering contributions to Bosnian historiography and his role in preserving and documenting the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Ottoman period. Muvekkit served as a librarian at the esteemed Gazi Husrev-bey's library in Sarajevo, where he made the first inventory of its extensive collection of books and manuscripts. His work in the library allowed him to immerse himself in a variety of historical texts and archival materials, which greatly informed his later scholarly endeavors. In his capacity as a muvekkit (timekeeper), he edited the Takvime (calendars) for Bosnia and Herzegovina and contributed to the annual salnams (almanacs), documents that provided valuable data on the region's social and administrative matters. In addition to his work in historiography, Muvekkit was also a poet, with his most famous literary work being "Imperial Governors in Bosnia." This text is notable for being the first prose work by a Bosniak written in the Bosnian language using the Cyrillic alphabet, marking an important moment in the development of Bosnian literature. Muvekkit's most significant scholarly achievement, however, was his Tarih-i-Bosna (History of Bosnia), a monumental work written in Turkish that offers a detailed account of the history of Bosnia from the Ottoman conquest to the Austrian occupation in 1878. Published for the first time in Bosnian translation in 1999, Tarih-i-Bosna spans over 1,400 pages and remains an invaluable resource for understanding the history of the region. Although Muvekkit was not a historian in the modern, critical sense, his work is considered a comprehensive and erudite compendium that combined Ottoman sources with local publications from Sarajevo, Zagreb, and Belgrade. His approach was corrective, providing a more nuanced perspective to the earlier historiography of Bosnia, which was largely based on Western sources like those of Farlatti and Orbini. Muvekkit's work proved instrumental in later historical studies, particularly after the publication of early Ottoman defters (tax registers), which provided crucial insights into the administrative and social structure of Ottoman Bosnia. His contributions to Bosnian historiography were foundational, and his method of sourcing from both Oriental and local texts was ahead of his time. Salih Muvekkit-Hadžihuseinović passed away on March 12, 1888, in Sarajevo and was buried in the cemetery of the Rogo Zade Mosque. His legacy as a historian, librarian, poet, and scholar remains an essential part of Bosnian intellectual history.
