Lieutenant Samuel Victor Charles Jones, 6th Battalion the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was the second son of Samuel Jones (solicitor) and Annie Jones, of Farnham Street, Cavan, County Cavan, Ireland. He was educated at Cavan Sxchool and Portora Royal School, Ireland. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Royal Dublin Fusiliers as a 2nd Lieutenant on 16 Jun 1915. He joined the 3rd Battalion on commissioning in Queenstown (Cobh), County Cork, Ireland for additional training. In Mar 1916 he was sent to Salonika to join the 6th (Service) Battalion the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. They had been formed at Naas in Aug 1914, under the command of 30th Brigade, 10th (Irish) Division. They were part of the force sent to Gallipoli, embarking at Devonport on 9 Jul 1915 on the "Alaunia", sailing to Alexandria, Egypt via Malta. They left Egypt on 22 July 1915 and arrived two days later at Mudros Bay, and landed on "C" Beach, Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on 7 Aug 1915. In early Oct 1915 they were moved via Mudros to Salonika. Lieutenant Jones joined the 6th Battalion in Salonika and was wounded in action against Bulgarian forces. He died of his wounds at a Casualty Clearing Station and was buried in Kilo 71 Military Cemetery, later called Struma Military Cemetery, Kalokastron, Regional unit of Serres, Central Macedonia, Greece. He is also commemorated on the Portora Royal School Great War Memorial, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland (see: https://irishwarmemorials.ie/memorial/portora-great-war-memorial/) and on the Royal Dublin Fusiliers WW1 Memorial in the Royal Memorial Chapel, RMA Sandhurst, Camberley, Surrey Heath Borough, Surrey, England.
