ΟΙΚΟΣ ΣΠΥΡΟΥ ΝΙΑΡΧΟΥ 1873 – 1955 ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ Σ. ΝΙΑΡΧΟΥ 1885 – 1980

Greek name: Σπύρος Νιάρχος Olive oil merchant, originally from the village of Vamvakou (Βαμβακού), municipality of Sparta, Laconia. He married heiress Evgenia Koumantarou (Ευγενία Κουμάνταρου), daughter of flourmill owner Stavros Koumantaros (Σταύρος Κουμάνταρος). Mr & Mrs Niarchos were naturalized US citizens and had owned a department store in Buffalo, New York; returning to Greece shortly before the birth of their son Stavros (the well-known Greek shipping magnate and founder of The Stavros Niarchos Foundation, one of the world's leading private, international philanthropic organizations). Spyros Niarchos' death was caused by thrombosis of the coronary artery (medical certificate by Dr Anastasopoulos dated 26th July 1955). (Although the memorial shows his year of birth as 1873, it is uncertain and could be 1-2 years either side. US certificate of registration has date of birth as February 8 1874; death report has age as 81 years. The 1873/74 discrepancy is much too great to be explained by the differences between Julian and Gregorian calendars, with in Greece Wednesday 15 February 1923 being followed by Thursday 1 March 1923.) U.S., Consular Registration Certificates, 1907-1918 Name: Speros S Niarchos Birth Date: 8 Feb 1874 Birth Place: Sparta, Greece Spouse: Iphiginia Residence: Buffalo New York Civil Date: 6 Oct 1916 Source Information: Ancestry.com.
