In memoriam

Despite being a strong swimmer Thomas drowned at sea in Gulf of Salonika, Aegeon Sea 36nm south of Greek port of Salonika, when German submarine U-35 torpedoed Hospital Transport "Marquette". It had 741 on board: 641 soldiers of Royal Field Artillery 29th Divisional Ammunition Column on it together with New Zealand nurses and medics plus 541 mules and a lot of ammunition. 167 died inc 32 of the medics and nurses. Never again were medics transported on a troop ship. His death resulted in his family being split up. Two of his children were brought up by his wife's parents, leaving the widow and remaining children living in poverty, sometimes in the workhouse.
