In memoriam

This is the grave of one of the soldiers of Serres Division (possibly 3rd Regiment) who most probably succumbed to injuries after the last battle of Doiran (1918) in its western part (Pip Ridge, Grand Couronne, city of Doiran etc). Serres Division showed great courage and skills and suffered heavy loses. In this fierce battle, where the enemy had very heavily fortified positions, the Greek Division had totally 173 officers and 2514 soldiers dead or wounded. Although the allies did not succeed their objectives Bulgaria finally collapsed and surrendered without terms on September 30th 1918. Many of the dead soldiers were not even 'lucky' enough to have a grave with their name in order at least to remain as a memory and reference spot for the loved ones.
