Romanian Physician and Bacteriologist. He rose to world acclaim as one of the founding members of modern microbiology. The son of a magistrate and politician who founded the Romanian Academic Society, he studied at the Faculty of Medicine in Budapest, Romania and in 1878 he received his medical degree at the University of Vienna in Vienna, Austria. Three years later, he received a scholarship and travelled to Paris, France and Berlin, Germany, where he studied with noted doctors and scientists Victor Cornil, Louis Pasteur, Rudolph Virchow, among others. In 1885, he wrote one of the first treatises of bacteriology named "Bacteria and their role in pathological anatomy and histology of infectious diseases" in collaboration with French pathologist Victor Cornil. That same year, he was appointed professor of histopathology at the Faculty of Medicine where he soon discovered a tick parasite that caused babesiosis, a rare and serious disease.
