His father Vlad Dracul and brothers Mircea II and Radu the Handsome also held the throne. Vlad III Dracula was his uncle. The 15th century in Wallachia was volatile with the throne passing among many princes. Vlad III and Radu were hostages to the Ottoman Sultan, offered by their father for support. Vlad III and Mircea II were successful military commanders against the Ottomans. Vlad III's reign of terror inspired Dracula. Radu gained the throne due to succession, losing it to Basarab Laiotă cel Bătrân. Vlad III gained and lost the throne multiple times. Vlad IV became a contender for the throne near the end of Vlad III's life. Conflict between Mehmed II's sons led to Vlad being placed on the throne. He was forced to accept the Sultan's suzerainty.
