Vladimir Gaćinović was a Bosnian Serb essayist in Austria-Hungary. He was one of the leaders and organizers of the secret cells of the revolutionary movement, "Young Bosnia," which was part of the Black Hand movement. He wrote the pamphlet, celebrating Bogdan Žerajić's patriotic action, thus making him a national hero. Zerajic's grave became a shrine, which Gavrilo Princip visited the night before the assassination of Austria-Hungarian Archduke Fernand and his wife Sophie. His father was an Orthodox priest and he was well-educated belonging to literary organizations. He served in the First Balkan War. During World War I, Gaćinović spent time as a volunteer in the French Navy, after which he traveled to the United States to seek aid and volunteers for Serbia. While in Switzerland in August of 1917, he was poisoned with arsenic and his death was declared a homicide. Historians link Gacinovic's political development to his meeting with the Communist Leon Trotsky in Switzerland in 1911. As one of the plotters stated, “We were not terrorists or anarchists. We were a young group struggling for national and cultural liberty.”
