After Graduating from the University of Goettingen, he settled in Kassel to establish his practice. Walter and Ilse were married 11 November, 1911, at 1100 hrs. He was drafted into the German Imperial Army in 1914, assigned as a Chief Surgeon. After recovering from a lung ailment, in late 1917, he was sent to the Russian Front in 1918. After the Bolshevik surrender he was sent home. The train was stopped in Craiova, Romania. As the local Station Master asked if any doctors were on board who could help, the local doctor died of Spanish Flu, Walter was the only one who volunteered to help. He died of Diphtheria and Typhoid fever as was buried quickly to avoid further contamination of other people.
