Son of Frank William Ward and Ada Evelyn Hubbard, Hamilton, Auckland, New Zealand Lt Hubbard was part of the SOE (Special Operations Executive) Military Mission to the Greek Resistance during the ongoing conflict between the rival Greek resistance movements, ELAS (Ellinikós Laïkós Apelevtherotikós Stratós), the military arm of the left-wing National Liberation Front, and EDES (Ethnikós Dimokratikós Ellinikós Sýndesmos), the right-wing National Democratic Greek League. He was one of a number of men sent there in an attempt to bring the two sides together in a common opposition to occupying German forces. He was accidentally shot by an ELAS gunman at Triklino, Greece.
