William Alfred Griffin

In memoriam

William Alfred Griffin and Althea Roie Lloyd married in New Zealand in 1938 (reg. 1938/14457). Their address was 13 St Benedict Street in Auckland, New Zealand when William signed up during World War II. He served with the 24 Infantry Battalion, Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. William was taken prisoner of war and interred in Stalag XVIII-A in Wolfsberg, Austria. At some stage he was moved to a POW camp in Serbia. It was here that a guard shot him dead on 15 February 1944. Further details are as yet unknown, but William was buried in the Belgrade War Cemetery. GRIFFIN, Pte. WILLIAM AFRED, 23035, 21st Bn. N.Z. Infantry, 15th February, 1944, Age 28.
