Zoltán Latinovits originally studied to become an engineer, however he soon turned to acting. He first appeared in the theatre in 1956, and debuted in movies in 1959. In the next two decades, he became one of the most celebrated actors in Hungary, with numerous memorable film, television and theatre work. Among his most famous works are the titular role in Szindbád (1971), Gyula Krúdy's wandering hero, the Major in Isten hozta, őrnagy úr! (1969), the screen adaptation of István Örkény's play Tóték, and the young doctor in Miklós Jancsó's existentialist Oldás és kötés (1963). A troubled, depressed man, Latinovits died at the age of 44, being hit by a train in Balatonszemes. His death is still debated by some as being a suicide or an accident.
