Zvonko Bek was given the name "Pavao" by the church. He used this name throughout his life. Pavao lost his father at a young age. His father was killed as a pilot during the Second World War. His father's brother, Pavao's uncle Franjo, married Pavao's mother and raised he and his brother Zdravko along with Franjo's five children after losing his first wife. Pavao married Paula Kihas and they raised three daughters together before his death in 1982.
