gr. TELEKI SAMU 1845 XI. 1 - 1916 III. 10

Count Sámuel Teleki de Szék was born in Sáromberke, Torda cttus, Kingdom of Hungary (today: Dumbravioara, Mures, Romania) on November 1st, 1845, as the second child of count Sámuel Ferenc Teleki de Szék. As a young man he studied mineralogy, geology, geography and astronomy. In 1881 he became a member of the Hungarian Parliament. During his political carrier, he met and became close friend of crown prince Rudolf von Habsburg, the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was Rudolf and his wife Stephanie who suggested him to set out for an expedition to East-Africa. They were the first to survey a great part of the East African Rift. Teleki was the first to reach the snow-line on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,300 m, and the first explorer to set foot on Mount Kenya, climbing up to around 4,300 m.
