Thomas Mangriotis

Businessman, Member of the Hellenic Parliament and Mayor of the Town of Giannitsa (between 1942 and 14/09/1944). As a Mayor of the town during the German Occupation, he tried his best to protect the locals against the German Atrocities and succeeded to remove -temporarily- the notorious War Criminal Friedrich Schubert from the town. Friedrich Schubert nevertheless, returned and given the excuse that some days earlier a German Soldier of Austrian origin named Ottmar (Audamar) Dorne defected and joined the Greek Communist Guerillas, he released a horrible retaliation against the citizens of Giannitsa but first he took revenge against the Mayor. On September 14th 1944, that horrible day for the town, the Mayor and at least another 110 people were executed and approx. 1/3 of the town was put to the torch (first to be burnt was the Town Hall). Reportedly, Mayor was either shot at his office or executed with another 8 outside a Tobacco Warehouse. Trivial: When the Hellenic Army Liberated Giannitsa on October 20th 1912 from the Ottoman Empire, the Prince Constantine (later King Constantine the XII) stayed at his house. His house still remains on the street of Giannitsa that bears his name.
